10 Ways J.K. Rowling Has Ruined Harry Potter

4. Her Desperation To Disprove Her Lack Of Diversity

While you can appreciate that she's trying, Rowling certainly has questionable ways of defending her lack of diversity in the series up until this point.

A big questionable Twitter defence came when Rowling was asked if there were any Jewish students at Hogwarts, to which Rowling simply tweeted back the name Anthony Goldstein, a Ravenclaw mentioned so briefly in the books that even a hardcore fan would be pressed to remember him without prompting. He doesn't appear in the films and primarily appears in the video game series, again without any reference to Judaism. This is hardly a praise-worthy inclusivity example.

Rowling has also contradicted her own material when faced with the criticism of Hermione's The Cursed Child depiction being played by black actresses. This isn't an issue in itself as regardless of book description it really isn't a big deal, but Rowling attempted to defend this move by claiming she never described Hermione's skin tone in the book at all and left it up to interpretation... which simply isn't true.

Besides Hermione being specifically cast as white in the movies and every book front cover she's depicted on clearly being a white-skinned girl, she's also actually described to have a "white face" in the books, which doesn't exactly scream open to interpretation.

Diversity is certainly a huge problem in the Harry Potter series, and it's admirable that Rowling should be trying to fix this. But she's going about it in the complete wrong way, seemingly patting herself on the back for inclusivity that simply was never there.

Chances are I’m watching a movie or replaying Mass Effect rather than doing anything productive.
