10 Ways To Be Outed As A Film School Graduate

7. Being A Director

At film school no one likes the director. Let's get something strait. No one goes to film school to learn how to be a gofer one day in the movie world. Whoever says that is a bald faced liar. People go to film school because they want to be directors, writers, actors, even producers, or directors of photography. What most students don't realize in the beginning though is that making movies is the most glorified blue collar nonsense in the world and that most people in the movie business are like truck drivers with a cooler job. That being said many come to film school wanting to be directors and leave wanting to be something else. Yet some do come solely to be directors. These people after suffering the initial "Oh, so we have another director then," attitude from everyone else will in turn spurn the jealousy of others when they rise above the rest to be given the director's job. Since student films are made up of volunteer crews where no one is getting paid everyone has a tendency to hate the directors anyways because they are the people who decide just how much work everyone else will need to do in order to accomplish their vision. You can see how tensions might arise with such an arrangement.
