10 Ways Sony Could Have Saved The Spider-Man Franchise Without Marvel
8. Fire Avi Arad And Matt Tolmach
Avi Arad was widely blamed for the failings of Spider-Man 3, so the producer being involved with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise never seemed like a wise idea. Sony clearly didn't feel that way though, and it's clear that he exerted his influence over the reboot. With the clueless Matt Tolmach backing him up, the two producers drew a great deal of scorn from fans for their comments during the sequel's press tour as they flat out refused to acknowledge any other Spider-Man than Peter, and put their foot down on the possibility of a crossover with The Avengers. Instead, all they could talk about was Venom and The Sinister Six, something which showed a disconnect between them and the fans. Taking the hapless duo out of a position of power for the third movie could have been all that was needed to make it great. Even after initial talks with Marvel fell apart, Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo offered their services as producers, providing a "difficult chat" with Arad take place. Had Sony had that, they may not have needed to turn to Marvel for their help in saving the Spider-Man franchise.
