10 Ways The DCEU Will Change Without Zack Snyder
5. The Return Of The Blue Boy Scout
Zack Snyder does not share most Superman fans' vision of what the Man Of Steel should be. This was a comic book fan brought up on Heavy Metal magazine, who found no pleasure in the clipped, well-mannered superhero books of the mainstream. He wanted darkness, raunch and a more grown-up vision - which is precisely why Watchmen appealed to him, and why he was the right man for that job.
It's very clear, in hindsight, that Snyder shouldn't ever have been given Superman as a property, because he had no intention of making a movie that followed the comics. He was far more invested, by his own admission, in deconstructing the character, and rightly or wrongly, Warner Bros saw in that a parallel with what Christopher Nolan was doing for Batman.
Unfortunately, that's not what Nolan was doing at all: he wasn't deconstructing, he was distilling, and unfortunately that hasn't happened with Snyder's vision of Superman. Hopefully, now that he's stepping aside, this heralded "true vision" of Superman we're being promised will tighten its trajectory to the source. He doesn't need to be that complex and he definitely shouldn't be hated: it's time for the beloved Blue Boy Scout to return.
