8. Ruining The Twist For No Reason At All
To me, this just smacks of idiocy. Though the vast majority of movie trailers are outsourced to a post-production house which may not have much knowledge of the film's narrative, surely these trailers have to be signed off on by the executives back at the studio? As a result, there's no real explanation as to why so many film trailers will ruin a twist for absolutely no reason at all. Take The Dark Knight; one of the major plot points of the film is that Jim Gordon gets killed in a shootout, only to reveal later on that he has faked his death. The problem is that this oh-so-clever twist seemed completely dumb to anyone who was paying attention when watching the trailer, because Gordon can be seen talking about The Joker when he is captured later in the film ("Nothing in his pockets but knives and lint"). This makes it dead obvious that it's a twist, and as someone who noticed this first-time around, it made that section of the film pretty damn tedious.
