6. Possession

The poster for 1981's Possession should tell you all you need to know about what the film has in store. It's a naked woman with snakes for hair and the hair snakes are attacking her. Yep, this is going to be odd.

Sam Neill plays a spy living in Germany in the 1980s. After returning home from a mission, he finds his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) wants a separation. This leads to a terrifying chain of events involving their young son, doppelgängers, and strange tentacled creature.

The film was written by Andrzej Żuławski when he was going through his own turbulent divorce, and the director leaves all that trauma in his movie.

Look man, you might have gone through a tough break up and all, but don't take it out on us.

Possession is bloody, gory, horrifying, and strange all at once, with enough misdirects to leave you wondering if any of the events are actually happening.

A flop at the time but praised much more highly in retrospect, Possession is a must watch for fans of body horror and of Cold War era Berlin. You laugh, but there must be some people out there who fit that description.
