Small Italian villages. Weird octopus women. Mount Vesuvius. These three things come together in the Venn diagram that could only be 2014's Spring.

Framed as a romance between Evan (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Louise (Nadia Hilker), Spring takes a turn for the bizarre when it's revealed that Louise isn't a beautiful Italian woman, but rather a 2000-year-old mutant that must impregnate herself every two decades to remain immortal.

Honestly, you get to know someone and then all the weirdest stuff comes out.

It's directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, two stars of the indie scene. They made Resolution in 2012 and have since been snapped up by Disney to direct a couple episodes of Moon Knight.

Described as a mixture of Richard Linklater and David Cronenberg, Spring manages to weave a compelling narrative whilst never shying away from its body horror foundations.

Spring is designed to do way more than just gross audiences out. It's designed to make people think, to inspire them to look past the differences of others, and to question what it is to be a human on this mortal.

Also, it reminds people to always ask their date if they're a millennia old squid monster.
