Alex Essoe is perhaps best known for her role as Wendy Torrance in the Shining sequel Doctor Sleep. One movie she's glad she didn't have to do 127 times was Starry Eyes, because that would have left her a quivering mess.

A stark warning about the price paid for fame, Starry Eyes has Essoe take on the role of an aspiring actress named Sarah who gets called back to an audition after a producer sees her ripping her own hair out.

This minor act of self-mutilation soon spirals into full-blown metamorphosis when her body becomes gruesomely disfigured.

Sarah learns that the company behind the audition is actually a demon-worshipping cult who persuade her to embrace the changes she is going through in exchange for money and success.

It can be a bit on the nose at times, but Starry Eyes works well within its own confines. The body horror is excellent; Sarah's transformation is exactly as grotesque as you'd want it to be, with plenty of finger nails falling out and skin becoming disfigured.

Oh, and there's one scene where she throws up blood-soaked maggots. If that ain't body horror, what is?
