10 Weirdest Endings In Horror Movies
4. Eraserhead (1977)
To describe any part of Eraserhead, David Lynch’s debut feature, as “weird” would be an understatement when it comes to the level of surrealism contained within this experimental horror.
Starring Jack Nance as mild-mannered protagonist Henry, the film chronicles him as he struggles to look after his newborn son – a monstrous, garbling creature wrapped in bandages. The entire film plays out like an insane fever dream set against the backdrop of an oppressive industrial cityscape. Viewers have speculated that Lynch’s film is an allegory of the fear of becoming a father, though the filmmaker has remained consistently vague about the intended meaning.
The film’s conclusion is as abstract and provocative as everything that proceeded it.
Unable to bear his child’s screams, Henry cuts open the bandages to reveal that they’ve been the only thing containing its organs. Henry then proceeds to kill the child, which results in a mind-bending sequence of hallucinations before Henry is embraced by the woman who sings in his radiator. With a look of content on his face, the screen is overcome with a white light before the image cuts to black.
It's entirely down to each individual what they take away from this deeply symbolic conclusion.
