The Human Centipede film series, a film about stitching people together mouth to anus, has carved itself into cinema history by being the sickest and most disgusting movie to come out of the independent cinema circuit. Just through its premise alone it became a meme that wormed its way into popular media such as The Simpsons and South Park, and it all came from Tom Six telling a joke to his friends about how sex offenders should be punished in his eyes.

The movie also takes its inspiration from the darkest parts in history as Tom Six’s German doctor is a carbon copy of infamous nazi war criminal Josef Mengele. Every single element of this movie is designed to make you sick and uncomfortable, so the fact that its concept came from a joke raises a lot of questions about Tom Six himself, especially since he parades this movie as being ‘100% medically accurate’ (it’s not at all medically accurate, it was just a tagline).

Out of all movies to come from strange ideas, The Human Centipede takes the crown prize because it’s not only repulsive to imagine in the first place, but to come from something so simple as an off-color joke whilst other films on this list come from great creativity is simply shocking. What’s more, the fact that it spawned two more sequels is simply baffling, and thankfully they were forgotten as quickly as they came.
