10 Weirdest Ideas Turned Into Horror Movies
8. Begotten
A horror movie about the biblical genesis of man is already something completely out of left field, but what E. Elias Merhige did with this idea is nothing short of both artistically impressive and downright horrible.
Begotten begins with a figure of God
disemboweling himself, and Mother Earth emerges from his stomach straight
afterwards. She uses God’s body to impregnate herself and gives birth to man, and it just gets weirder and weirder from there.
Begotten is a stylistic nightmare that made the rounds in the underground film scene due to just how strange it is. There’s no dialogue, it’s all in black & white, and everything has a weirdly eccentric edge as scenes of mutilation and disemboweling play out in a wildly absurd atmosphere. It’s a very difficult film to muster as it feels like an assault on the senses with the horrific imagery and sounds that are ever-present during its 70-minute run-time.
What’s funny to add, is that upon watching this film, Nicholas Cage, in one of his madder decisions, decided to get E. Elias Merhige to direct Shadow Of The Vampire, which became a great critical success.
Afterwards, E. Elias Merhige made one more feature film – Suspect Zero – then distanced himself from the film world altogether, only making 3 short films from 2004 to the present day.
