You knew a relationship this strange would have to be included on this list, especially seeing as though one of the two isn't even human. Spike Jonze's Her follows Theodore Twombly (played by Joaquin Phoenix), a man who develops a relationship with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an intelligent computer operating system personified through a female voice. Samantha is designed to please Theodore based around his personality. She initially does simple things that any other computer would do, but with a human touch. However, as time goes on the AI develops such a unique personality that eventually he falls in love with her. And the strange thing about it all is, you can pretty much see why. Her programming to learn helps her form a very genuine and likable personality. Theodore is already a fairly simple man, to him the most important thing about a woman is her mind. Well, Samantha is nothing but a mind so it actually makes sense that this bond would ultimately become so strong. On one hand this is a charming love story that doesn't revolve around sex or contrived melodrama. On the other hand you can look at it as a creepy tale of a pathetic loser who falls in love with a non-existent person. Either way, this is one of the most bizarre love stories ever put to film.
