1. A Horror Movie - The Final Girls (2015)
The Final Girls may not have reinvented the slasher genre, but it did a good job trying. Taking a leaf out of the Scream playbook and then setting the whole thing on fire, the movie takes Max Cartwright (Taissa Farmiga) and her friends into the world of one of the horror B-movies her now-deceased mother (Malin Akerman) starred in 20 years prior.
Camp Bloodbath is the film, and the gang must use their knowledge of horror movie tropes not just to survive, but to protect Max’s mother and hopefully find a way home. Meanwhile, classically deformed slasher villain Billy Murphy (Daniel Norris) terrorises the characters of his movie and the in-movie “real world”, with potentially reality-crossing consequences.
This is definitely one of the strangest places a character (or characters) has ever been trapped, but its reversal of the Last Action Hero idea - into a horror movie, of all things - is so clever yet so obvious, film producers the world over must have been kicking themselves when they saw this one. And it manages a tactful unpicking of the final girl trope while it’s at it!
