Forced into the close confines of a backwoods motel by a desert storm, ten strangers get picked off one by one by a killer in their midst, and cop-turned-limo driver Ed Dakota (John Cusack) leads the attempts to reveal the murderer's identity and survive. Meanwhile, elsewhere, serial killer Malcolm Rivers (Pruitt Taylor Vince) awaits execution for murdering a group of motel guests. But while the two seem to be related, nothing is apparent, reality doesn’t behave quite as it ought to, and things begin to get a little… strange.

While we expect the two strands to eventually come together, nothing can prepare us for the movie’s twist (spoiler alert): The motel, the ten characters, and their entire mystery are contained within Malcolm’s head. Each of the characters is one of Malcolm’s distinct personalities, trapped alongside the homicidal personality who was in charge during the time of his murders out in the real world.

All of the motel guests have their own distinct identities, desires, and senses of self, despite being contained within the mind of one person, and it is up to them to save themselves and banish the murderer among them for good. Whether they manage it is another matter.
