10 Weirdest Virtual Reality Horror Movies

3. The Lawnmower Man

The Cell
New Line Cinema

Nobody is going to pretend The Lawnmower Man is great. The story’s author, Stephen King, was so unhappy with how it turned out, he sued the studio.

But that doesn’t mean this adaptation doesn’t have some creatively terrifying ideas. The Lawnmower Man centres around a virtual reality researcher called Dr. Lawrence Angelo (Pierce Brosnan) who uses VR and psyschoactive drugs on chimpanzees to enhance their intelligence.

Pressurised to use a human test subject, Lawrence encourages a mentally disabled man called Jobe to take part in the experiments, promising they will make him smarter. Although the tech boosts Jobe's intelligence, he also develops psychic abilities and an insatiable desire for absolute power.

Now, let’s be honest. The special effects in the virtual reality segments are shoddy. (In case you were wondering, they looked dated when the movie came out.)

But the idea that using virtual reality can cause irreversible damage to your brain is a haunting thought. Even though some of the death scenes look silly, watching people dying from using the virtual simulator or shrivelling up after being consumed by the tech are genuinely unnerving to watch.
