There's a reason why Fry spends the entire series desperately trying to hook up with Leela. She's intelligent, powerful, gorgeous, and she wears the hell out of a wife beater. Who even cares that she's only got one eye, could beat you up, and comes from mutant stock that lives in the sewer system underneath New New York? Or, for that matter, her very serious abandonment issues that stem from growing up in the Cookieville Minimum-Security Orphanarium? None of that matters at all once you get to know her. She's the captain of the Planet Express delivery ship, and shows throughout the series that she is a competent pilot (despite her lack of depth perception and the fact that she crashes through a billboard in the opening credits of the show). Outwardly, she's a very strong-willed and self-assured woman, even though she secretly feels self-conscious about the fact that she only has one eye (something she tried to rectify during the series, but eventually went back to the Cyclops look).
