10 Wild Ideas For The Hulk In Phase 5
9. Greenlight A Hulk Movie You Cowards
Ruffalo and Feige’s insistence that Universal’s distribution rights for a solo Hulk movie are the major stumbling block to greenlighting the big green doofus on the big screen is nonsense. Marvel’s deal with Sony over Spider-Man was far more restrictive financially, and Paramount distributed every other movie in Phase 1 except The Avengers.
Part of the real issue is that solo Hulk movies haven’t made much money, which is unfair: Lee’s Hulk was a misconceived misfire, and Leterrier’s Incredible Hulk was released before the MCU blew up and before Ruffalo was cast.
The other concern is that the Hulk is a special attraction that doesn’t work as the protagonist of a feature film, which is an odd position to take for a company that’s published at least one Hulk comic a month for nearly sixty years.
In Hulk: Green Eyed Monster, adapted from the comics, ‘Banner’ finds that his way out was just a dead end. All his tinkering did was create a new Hulk persona that thought it was Bruce Banner: all of Banner’s brains, but full of relaxed self-confidence, free of the self-loathing and repressed anger that Bruce had lived with all his life.
But the Hulk was the release value for that repressed childlike rage, and when events conspire against him and ‘Bruce’ finally snaps, the savage Hulk returns… in Banner’s old body. Arrested and committed, Bruce must find a way to properly deal with the demons in his head before they all start coming out to play.
