10 Wildly Unnecessary Movie Sequels That Were Awesome Anyway

6. Paddington 2

The first Paddington was a genuinely wonderful film, a surprise hit that paid tremendous respect to the endearing and adorable bear we all know and love. The last minute change of Paddington's voice from Colin Firth to Ben Whishaw was a stroke of genius, as he managed to perfectly encapsulate the essence of his personality.

However charming the film was, repeating its success appeared challenging to say the least. Many feared that the original was simply lightning in a bottle, and a sequel attempting to repeat the same brand of humour would just come off as tired and forced.

Needless to say from its inclusion in this list, Paddington 2 proved these naysayers wrong. The sheer vanity behind Hugh Grant's Felix Buchanan, along with Brendan Gleeson's hilarious role, built on the foundations of the original in an unexpected but extremely fitting manner.

Once again nailing the slapstick comedy, the follow-up also had moments of real excitement and an incredible message, focusing on the effects the actions of a good person have and what happens when that is taken away. Paddington 2 is a great example of how to approach a sequel by taking the elements of the original that work and then expanding on them in new but ultimately familiar ways.
