10 Women Who Could Direct Wonder Woman

7. Karyn Kusama

Since winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and the Prix de la Jeunesse at Cannes for her debut feature Girlfight, Kusama has carved out a niche for films about women using strength and physicality in redressing traditional gender roles. Her reputation as a third wave feminist working within pop genres is perfect for a potential Wonder Woman director.

Her work on Aeon Flux shows Kusama can handle a hefty budget and large scale action material. That movie was ultimately a failure, but Kusama's visuals impressed and much of the faults were down to an uneven script and the fact that the studio's version of the film was 30 minutes shorter than Kusama's preferred cut. With a gross of $52 million on a $62 million budget Aeon Flux was a loss maker, but hardly a career ending one (indeed Joe Johnston's The Wolfman made similar losses right before he went on to direct Captain America: The First Avenger), while studios will probably have noted the unspectacular but solid profit earned by Kusama's last film, Jennifer's Body, as evidence for her continued ability to make profitable work.
