10 Worst CGI Effects In Sci-Fi Movies
1. Alien: Covenant - Soulless Xenomorph
Speaking of face huggers!
After the success of Ridley Scott's return to the Alien universe with Prometheus (2012) fans were over the moon to hear that the legendary director was on board for the sequel titled Alien: Covenant (2017).
Yet, instead of building on the practical effects which often made Prometheus and his original Alien (1979) film such a believable and therefore even more terrifying experience, Scott relied more heavily on CGI for Covenant.
Sure, Prometheus featured its fair share of CG wizardry. But, a large number of the creatures we saw on screen were practical and created thanks to excellent make up and animatronics.
Sadly, when it came to finally bringing the iconic Xenomorph back to life in Covenant, Scott decided to mostly use CGI and what we were left with was a hugely dissatisfying alien monster which felt like it belonged in the 90's.
The worst moment came during the scene where the famous creature was attacking the Covenant space ship attempting to take off. Instead of making us genuinely fear this acid-blooded alien, Scott snapped us straight out of the moment and forced us to focus on what appeared to be a Xenomorph taken straight out of one of the many Alien video games.
Covenant still boasted a few decent practical monstrosities, but our beloved Xenomorph deserved more than the clunky CGI treatment it eventually got in the end.
