10 Worst CGI Effects In Sci-Fi Movies

2. The 5th Wave - A Sea Of Crappy CGI

Rick Yancey's sci-fi young adult novel The 5th Wave was warmly received when it landed on bookshelves in 2013 and opened the door for sequels in the form of The Infinite Sea and The Last Star in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

So, as with any popular YA book, it was only a matter of time before a production company tried to turn the series into a lucrative movie franchise.

However, unlike the hugely successful Twilight and Hunger Games films, The 5th Wave (2016) didn't really find an audience. The predictable script and rotten visual effects on show definitely can't have helped.

Early on we witness a fairly bog-standard tsunami wipe out a city, but things only go from bad to worse as soon we get our first look at the supposed true form of The Others thanks to some x-ray equipment.

Through Ben's (Nick Robinson) eyes we see what looks like a discount face-hugger-like creature probably designed to freak out the younger members in the audience. Instead it likely elicited jolts of unexpected laughter from them and became yet another stick to beat this weak adaptation with.
