10 Worst CGI Effects In Sci-Fi Movies
8. Lost In Space - Blarp Steals The Spotlight
Remarkably, in a film starring Gary Oldman, Heather Graham, William Hurt and Matt LeBlanc, the most memorable part of sci-fi adventure flick Lost in Space (1998) was the appearance of one of the worst CGI messes in cinema history; the lizard-monkey oddity known as Blarp.
To bring this dodgy creature to the big screen, the actors on set would react to an animatronic puppet of Blarp and the CGI performance was later added in post-production by the special effects team who were being supervised by Nick Allder - the person who watched over the effects in films like Alien, The Fifth Element and Hellboy. What could go wrong?
Well, for starters the actors don't even look like they knew where the creature's eyes were whenever they were interacting with it. On top of this lack of genuine connection, the digitally realised being seemed less like an alien from another world and more like a drawing you lazily doodled whilst day-dreaming at school.
You can't even blame these terrible visuals on a small budget or lack of top level technology as films like Jurrassic Park (1993) and Men in Black (1997) managed to produce next level CGI creatures with similar budgets at that time.
Blarp is simply a blip most people would prefer to forget.
