10 Worst CGI Effects In Sci-Fi Movies
3. Mad Max: Fury Road - The 3-D Steering Wheel
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) didn't solely rely on CGI to produce a staggering piece of sci-fi cinema.
In fact, the majority of the high octane action we saw on the big screen was legitimately performed on set, with 150 stunt people taking part in extraordinary sequences and even the film's stars getting their hands dirty when the time called for it.
That's what made the decision to add a distracting piece of random CGI into one of the film's most impressive stunts so baffling.
Of course, CGI had been used to get rid of cables and safety rigs in post-production, and also to produce terrific moments like the other worldly sandstorm we see in the flick. Yet, director George Miller also weirdly chose to digitally add the sight of the War Rig's steering wheel (and a guitar) soaring towards the camera after Nux (Nicholas Hoult) had heroically sacrificed himself to save his friends.
If the effect was as realistic as the others we'd seen in the sci-fi western on wheels then we probably could've forgiven Miller for this peculiar choice. But, the frustrating attempt to immerse the audience in the climactic crash with poorly made 3-D projectiles stuck out like a sore thumb and is one of the few annoying blemishes in this near-perfect experience.
