Out of all the villains in the DC Extended Universe, Steppenwolf is certainly one of the most dull. Another in a long list of big grey CGI bad guys that the DCEU movies have given us since the series began with Man of Steel back in 2013.

While Steppenwolf isn’t exactly the worst looking CGI villain that we’ve seen in superhero movies, it’s the sheer lack of weight and life in this DC bad guy that makes him so uninteresting.

In the age of compelling CG villains, such as Infinity War and Endgame’s Thanos, that have the actors performances shine through the motion capture and effects, it’s a shame to see none of that life given to Steppenwolf.

Actor Ciarán Hind is completely obscured under layers of grey CG that does nothing to bring out any of the nuances and emotion that his performance might have had. It doesn’t help that Steppenwolf feels weightless as he springboards himself around on Themyscira in one of the early action sequences.

With numerous script changes and a production littered with problems, it’s easy to see why Steppenwolf turned out so bland.
