10 Worst CGI Effects In Superhero Films
7. The Hulk - Hulk
Ang Lee’s Hulk movie from 2003 is certainly a product of its time, with style and CGI that scream early 2000s. Releasing not long after Sony’s first Spider-Man movie, it’s easy to see why Universal Pictures were eager to capitalise on the growing superhero trend in Hollywood. Unfortunately, the CGI just wasn’t at the level necessary to convincingly pull off the effects needed for a live action Hulk movie.
Hulk is packed with subpar CGI. From the gamma infused dogs to the tanks that get thrown around, it all looks mediocre. However, the Hulk himself is where the poor CGI really stands out. When on screen, the titular character often looks like he is floating above the environments he is composited into, and when we are treated to close-ups on his face the rubbery effects only become more apparent.
What sucks most here is that the creative team behind the movie clearly cared about the character and wanted to do him justice. It just wasn’t the right time. This would become clearer in 2008, as Marvel’s second entry into the MCU, The Incredible Hulk, would prove that it was only a matter of time that CGI could give us a convincing iteration of our favourite big green rage monster.
