2007's Ghost Rider was Marvel's first attempt at creating a live action version of the beloved comic book character, and it certainly shows.

While the movie was mostly criticized for its poor script and odd tonal changes, the CGI is not exactly great. In particular, the effects on Ghost Rider’s flaming skull look woefully mediocre.

It's worth noting that these effects are by no means awful, and in certain angels they look passable. It’s when we are greeted with close-ups that we see how poor they are.

Oftentimes, Ghost Rider looks like something straight out of a PS2 game.

It’s hard to tell exactly what makes the effect look so subpar. The more one stares at it, the most perplexing it becomes. Could it be the total lack of dirt and grit on the skull? Or is it the shoddy lighting on the flames? Perhaps it’s a combination?

Whatever it is, it certainly makes the $110 million budget look questionable. Maybe the real question we should all be asking is: where did all the money go?
