10 Worst Changes Peter Jackson Made To The Lord Of The Rings
3. Making Elrond Ambivalent Towards Aragorn
Peter Jackson made a very strange choice in making Elrond reluctant to accept Aragorn as the King of Men. He gets round to it eventually but not before he seems to denounce Aragorn and Gondor as bunch of washed up has-beens.
Elrond is supposed to be one of the wiser characters in the story. He recognises that the elves are on their last legs and the dwarves cannot help. He and Gandalf essentially scheme to reinstate Aragorn as the King of Gondor, realising he is the last hope for Middle Earth. Without a strong King in Gondor there would be no hope of holding Sauron's forces at bay while the Fellowship attempted to destroy the Ring. Aragorn was intended to travel only so far as Gondor were he and Boromir would go to Minas Tirith and lead the defence.
In the films this sub plot is all but removed. The narrative focuses merely on the destruction of the Ring as the only way to defeat Sauron. It has the effect of making Elrond seem far less wise than he really is and diminishes the significance of Aragorn.
