10 Worst Disaster Movies Of All Time
2. Godzilla (1998)
Roland Emmerich has directed a lot of crap in his life, but Godzilla from 1998 has to be his worst (10,000 BC is also up there). A true disaster film, in every sense of the word.
This adaptation of the Japanese classic is awful and totally ill-conceived. Emmerich, who really had no interest in the property to begin with, and his co-writer Dean Devlin, decided to go against everything Godzilla stands for.
Instead of sticking true to the formula set up by the previous Godzilla films, Emmerich's monstrosity attempts to be some kind of Jurassic Park knock-off, all while cramming in annoying human characters and bad effects work.
There is little redeeming to be seen here. The city destruction, which was promised to be massive in the marketing, is tame. A few buildings get blown up and Godzilla sits on a bridge or something. Who cares?
Of course, we never got that sequel that the filmmakers threatened us with in the film's final moments. Mainly because, despite the colossal marketing campaign, Godzilla didn't shatter the box office.
Poor word of mouth likely killed this creature off. Thank goodness.
