Doing the Irish accent is great craic, as spoken right it sounds great. Irish people do a great Irish accent. Naturally. But for everyone else there is generic Irish, there is regional Irish – a huge different between regional accents, for example in Belfast and Cork – and then there is Richard Gere Irish.

To pull off the latter version, you need to sound like you are intimidated by the very words coming out of your own mouth. Rather admirably, it is more difficult than it sounds.

There are a number of scenes in the film where he even seems uncomfortable, perhaps because he knows his accent is affecting the audience in a very similar manner.

Gere’s Irish accent seems to fluctuate between a strong brogue and a soft, almost American accent where he clearly has not nailed his lines in the vernacular.
