10 Worst Film Couples Of The Last 20 Years

8. Tobey Maguire And Kirsten Dunst - Spider-Man

Superheroes, as we know, are not like us. They don't always feel emotions like humans do, and they're often incapable of expressing themselves in terms of love and affection. Spider-Man, however, is supposed to be the one superhero who taps into the romantic teenager inside us all.

Peter Parker is a perpetually angsty, lovelorn high schooler who can't handle his newfound responsibilities as a web-slinger and dedicate himself to his sweetheart simultaneously. The conflicting emotions that ensue should create a guaranteed recipe for a compelling onscreen relationship.

Unless, of course, you cast a dopey blank slate like Tobey Maguire in the lead role and force America's Sweetheart, Kirsten Dunst, to spend an entire trilogy interacting with the human equivalent of a broken clock.

It certainly didn't help that some of their key scenes together, such as the upside down kiss in the rain, suffered from some logistical issues. Maguire has since likened the kiss to a rather unsexy mouth-to-mouth resuscitation due to the fake rain flooding his nostrils.

Their chemistry only got worse as the series wore on. They might as well have brought in a pre-teen Kristen Stewart and a package of vanilla pudding to do the job by the time the third movie rolled around. Very few moviegoers would have noticed.
