10 Worst Horror Movies Of 2019

9. The Curse Of La Llorona

Countdown movie
Warner Bros. Pictures

Based on a Mexican folktale about a love-scorned woman who drowned her children and after death continues wandering the Earth as a weeping ghost, The Curse of La Llorona had a creepy piece of source material to work with. The movie does not seem too concerned with the legend it's based on, though. Instead, it doubles down on The Conjuring universe formula.

There are some jump scares and even some tense scenes of people wandering around in the dark, but the Curse of La Llorona overuses these tactics to the point it saturates the scares. After the jump scares stop working, the movie tries to remind you how much you like The Conjuring by using character crossovers and Easter eggs. This makes the film feel even less original.

The Curse of La Llorona does a disservice to a genuinely creepy legend and is less concerned with doing anything new and more concerned with being a part of a larger cinematic universe. Unfortunately, it does not even do that well.
