6. The Prodigy
What else can be said in the overdone “evil child” subgenre that has not already been said? The most prolific horror screenwriter of 2019 Jeff Buhler (Pet Sematary and the Jacob’s Ladder remake) thought he had something new to say with The Prodigy, and the script even got Orange is the New Black star Taylor Schilling on board. Despite all this, The Prodigy is still just another evil kid movie.
Horror has grown increasingly complex over the last couple of years, but there is still room for turn-off-your-brain horror movies. The Prodigy seems to try and straddle both these realms and does not do it successfully. The ending is interesting and would be worthy of discussion if it did not feel so tacked on. The only thing that does work in this movie are a handful of jump scares.
It turns out, The Prodigy had nothing new to say in the "evil child" subgenre. In fact, if feels like a movie we have seen a dozen times before.
