10 Worst Horror Movies Of 2025 (So Far)
7. Alpha
After the release of Raw and Titane, Julia Ducournau looked like she could take David Cronenberg's crown as the new body-horror auteur. Sadly, the French filmmaker's most recent work, Alpha, is a major disappointment.
The coming-of-age drama follows a teenager called Alpha who becomes infected with a bloodborne disease after sharing a needle, causing her to slowly turn into a marble statue. As vicious rumours spread, Alpha is shunned by her peers, forcing her to face her mortality alone.
Although Alpha has an enthralling premise, it runs the risk of relying on heavy-handed themes, especially since it's obviously based on the AIDS epidemic. Ironically, the film suffers the opposite problem, not exploring the concept enough. The titular character is depicted more as an angsty teen rather than a terminally ill victim.
Though Ducournau's earlier work is beautiful to look at, this film is needlessly drenched in orange and grey hues, which is more jarring than eye-catching. There are some potentially hard-hitting scenes, but the impact is diluted since the dialogue is repeated almost verbatim.
Also, the final twist is the worst kind, since it's deeply predictable and non-sensical at the same time.
