6. Odin's Original Death - Thor: Ragnarok

Captain Marvel Brie Larson
Marvel Studios

The final theatrical version of Thor: Ragnarok sees Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) older sister Hela (Cate Blanchett) released from imprisonment following the death of her father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) in Norway and promptly destroying Mjolnir.

But the scene was originally very different, taking place in New York City as Thor and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) track down a boozy, incoherent, and homeless Odin in a dingy alleyway, before Hela arrives of her own accord, kills Odin, and then shatters Mjolnir.

It's easy to see why Taika Waititi scrapped and reworked so much of this scene: killing Odin in an alley is both visually unappealing and un-cinematic, and the swiftness with which he dies means he doesn't get the same poignant farewell with his sons as he does in the final version.

Having Odin die on a Norwegian plain while kitted out in some appropriately God-like duds lent his ultimate demise a good deal more dignity than in the tonally iffy original version, which would surely have rubbed many fans up the wrong way.
