Captain Marvel is probably the single most mediocre and forgettable MCU film. Aside from a very effective mid-film twist regarding the Skrulls, Captain Marvel does everything you were expecting in a safe, lifeless and thoroughly cliched manner.

Worse still, it fails as an origin story since Captain Marvel herself is pretty bland and doesn't have enough of an arc.

And once again, Captain Marvel is certainly not a bad film since it's well-acted, has a good villain and is reasonably fun, but the MCU has proven many times over that it can do a lot better than just 'reasonably fun'.

Oh, and the less said about the film's ghastly explanation for how Nick Fury lost his eye, the better.

More than anything else, it's just a real shame this movie wasn't better. It was the first-ever MCU film to be fronted by a female superhero, after all.
