10 Worst Modern Comic Book Character Adaptations
5. Steel (Steel)
That picture is real, as hard as it may be to believe it's not Shaquille O'Neal in a terrible, off colour Batman mask.
Steel is a character best described as a very physically capable human who has power equal to Superman when wearing his eponymous Steel suit. As a human (in the comics) he is at near peak levels of strength, agility and technological genius, unfortunately all of these have been forgotten for this adaptation. The powers and qualities that made Steel a good character were replaced with cheesy dialogue and terrible acting.
The film version of Steel is quite literally Steel by name only. He shares very little with his comic book counterpart other than his name, race and ability to create powerful weapons. Originally being pitched as a spin off to the potential 'Death of Superman' movie of the 90's, this film went ahead despite the lack of the aforementioned movie and as such completely lacked context and backstory which becomes painfully obvious from the very first scenes of the movie.
While being a serviceable comic book character with interesting potential, the only movie iteration of Steel we have so far seen will go down in history as perhaps the most forgotten superhero ever adapted to cinema.
