10 Worst Modern Comic Book Character Adaptations
4. Mr Freeze (Batman & Robin)
The comic book Mr Freeze is a tragic character, perhaps one of the most intriguing and conflicted villains of DC Comics. Having a back story similar to Walter White of Breaking Bad fame, Victor Fries must turn to the creation of a vast criminal empire in order to help prolong the life of his wife and try and bring her back to health. In the 1997 film 'Batman & Robin' he wants to help his wife but also make every single ice related pun possible while laughing his way through the entire movie.
The tragedy of Mr Freeze is one that has resulted in an unashamedly mature character for older and more mature fans of comic books to appreciate and as such should be handled with dignity and respect. Unfortunately in Joel Schumacher's neon coloured nightmare the legacy of Mr Freeze is so trampled upon that there has been no attempt to revitalise him on the big screen since.
Spewing out forced pun after pun we are introduced to Arnold Schwarzenegger in the guise of Mr Freeze, a completely dumbed down and simplified version of the tragic character. Adding humour to this certain character would have been acceptable had the humour been tasteful and perhaps witty, instead we were subjected to pun after horrible pun. The fact that Schwarzenegger had any sort of career following this movie is a miracle.
