10 Worst Modern Comic Book Character Adaptations

3. The Mandarin (Iron Man 3)

Bruce Wayne Batman
Marvel Studios

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is usually the standard by which all other adaptations and characters are compared, that's why it was such an unwelcome surprise seeing what they had done to The Mandarin.

Throughout the first and most of the second act we were led to believe that the enigmatic Mandarin played by Sir Ben Kingsley was the real deal. Cold and menacing with just the right amount of mystery about himself, he could have been one of the great villains of the MCU. When Tony Stark comes across the Mandarin (now Trevor Slattery) exiting the bathroom all of the build and tension surrounding the character dissipates instantly.

The Mandarin of the comics is perhaps Iron Man's best villain, conniving and ahead of Stark constantly he is a worthy adversary to the man that has everything. Leader of the Ten Rings and bane of western society he is truly a menace that deserved better.

Now if you were to make the argument that Aldrich Killian is the real Mandarin then once again you are let down as the character shares little more than his supposed name with the villain of the source material.

Overall Iron Man 3 suffered due to the convoluted nature of the storytelling and overdoing it with the villainy. Had the Mandarin been the true villain of the movie, Ben Kingsley was the man to bring charisma and notoriety to the role. Instead we were given a drunken oaf who couldn't even stay awake.
