10 Worst Modern Comic Book Character Adaptations
2. Galactus (Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer)
Galactus of the comics is not purely a villain, doomed to roam the cosmos constantly in need of sustenance due to his size and powers he is in fact seen by some of the higher in universe powers as a necessity. Keeping balance in the universe is often quoted as one of Galactus' responsibilities, just this makes him an intriguing and well developed character, but in 2007 we were given a giant and angry space cloud.
Given little backstory other than The Silver Surfers exposition dump about Galactus destroying his home planet, we are left with the impression that Galactus is simply a powerful being who requires so much energy he must consume planets. There is no development of the character, no effort to give him a recognisable form and no effort to make him the literal force of nature that he should be and ultimately this serves the film in the worst way, by deflating the third act completely.
There is a reason that despite his size, Galactus is given a humanoid shape in comic books and that reason is to be relatable. It is hard to depict him any differently as if he was given a truly out of this world appearance this would make it difficult to depict any hero going toe to toe with him. Albeit there is still the great size difference but the humanoid shape and communication that this grants would allow for a mental showdown of intellect or at the very least the comprehension that the heroes don't realise what they've gotten themselves into.
The most important job of a villain is to give the heroes something to fight for and ultimately Galactus has nothing to do with the plot of this movie other than to deliver the threat of The Silver Surfer who is allowed to be the hero and dispatch the true villain of the story. Ultimately though this depiction will go down as the worst villain of modern comic book movies due simply to the fact that he was in no way like his comic book form be it appearance or motivation.
And before you mention Parallax, AT LEAST HE HAD A FACE!
