10 Worst Movie CGI Of 2020
5. The Avalanche - Mulan
Though it's certainly nobody's favourite movie of the year, Disney's live-action Mulan remake was pretty good, and certainly much better than many were expecting going in.
Yet despite being produced with an obscene $200 million budget, it's surprising how much of the film looks oddly cheap.
Much like Guy Ritchie's Aladdin remake, the entire production is draped in a veneer of blurry green screen slop, no matter how exceptional the costumes and general production design might be.
The most objectionable single scene sees Mulan (Yifei Liu) riding through a blurry, scarcely coherent CGI avalanche to rescue Chen Honghui (Yoson An).
There's never a moment where we believe that Mulan is truly defying death to rescue her friend, because it's so blatantly obvious the environmental elements were all concocted in post-production.
The end result is a film that paradoxically looks exorbitantly expensive and embarrassingly cheap at the same time, while foregrounding the limitations of live-action remakes compared to their animated originals.
