A reboot of a reboot, that not even the star power of Tom Cruise could save. When the film was announced, many questioned why it was being remade. As it turned out the film was intended to restart not only the film series but Dark Universe franchise. The film failed in this endeavour and Universal’s beloved horror films from the '40s onwards look to remain dead and buried.

The key issue with the Tom Cruise iteration of the film was that the 90s and 00s films are still loved by fans. No one really wanted a mummy film without Brendan Fraser and that trilogy had built up unrealistic, nostalgic expectations. While Tom Cruise gave it his best shot, the film seemed to tread old ground while heavy-handedly setting up a new franchise that no one really wanted.

Despite this, people turned up to see it. The film made over 400 million dollars in the box office, but that was probably just enough to break even.
