10 Worst Neighbours In Horror Movies
7. Lars Thorwald (Rear Window)
Mr Thorwald is not one to be trifled with. With a short fuse, dreadful temper and a propensity for homicide, he's not exactly the safest neighbour around either. A lifetime of ferocious arguing with his missus finally comes to a head for the bespectacled menace in this Hitchcock classic. Spied on by the newly housebound L.B. Jefferies (one could make a case he too is a worst neighbour candidate given his sheer nosiness), Thorwald's furious murder of his own wife comes under scrutiny.
As if been a wife killer wasn't bad enough, Thorwald also murders a neighbour's dog and is more than ready to kill Jefferies during their final confrontation. Played with a suitably understated rage by Perry Mason and Ironside star Raymond Burr, Thorwald's villainy is suspenseful more by implication than graphic action. As viewers, we piece together his dastardly deeds as Jefferies does, ultimately realising the suspicions surrounding him are more than warranted.
Having murdered pets, attempted to kill neighbours and buried belongings of his wife's in the building garden, Thorwald is the kind of tenant most would like to see evicted.
