10 Worst Neighbours In Horror Movies
6. Wayne Mackey (Summer Of 84)
At a first glance, Wayne Mackey appears to be a model citizen and a trustworthy, hard working police officer. He's the kind of neighbour one would never expect any trouble from. If only he wasn't so fixated on killing teenaged boys all over Cape Bay, Oregon.
Under investigation from a group of adolescents (one of whom happens to live next door to him), the grim underbelly of Mackey's life is gradually exposed. The devious copper is brought to life by Mad Men alumni, Rich Sommer who gives this sick killer a nicely two-faced demeanour. A great guy on the surface, Sommer also captures the predatory evil within, building to a gnarly climax for a film initially slow in cranking up the tension.
This '80s nostalgia festival spends so much time on the friendships between the young protagonists that Mackey's evil ways coming to light borders on jarring in tone. His treatment of the characters we've come to sympathise with wraps the film up on a bleak, disturbing note and takes the suburban paranoia trope further than the likes of The 'Burbs and Rear Window.
