10 Worst Netflix Movies

6. The Kissing Booth

It's very, VERY hard to make a high school romcom work these days, seeing as how the 80s and 90s explored that genre so thoroughly, so if you want to make one without any kind of clever or subversive hook to it, you'd better have a real knack for writing teenage characters and an understanding of current youth culture to at least seem authentic. Yeah, the Kissing Booth movies don't have either of those.

These high school romcoms are a perfect example of what happens when you try to take a John Hughes style 80s high school flick and transplant them fully formed into the modern day. Which means that these movies are about 7 different flavors of uncomfortable.

It's got everything: uncomfortably controlling male leads, making light of sexual assault, cheesy music and being nowhere near as funny as it thinks it is. If this was an experiment to see how an 80s romcom, rape jokes and all, would fare in the modern day - well, I can't say it didn't succeed because it got two sequels, but success by Netflix standards is a really hard metric to track so whatever!

John Tibbetts is a novelist in theory, a Whatculture contributor in practice, and a nerd all around who loves talking about movies, TV, anime, and video games more than he loves breathing. Which might be a problem in the long term, but eh, who can think that far ahead?
