10 Worst Performances In 2017 Movies (So Far)

5. Dakota Johnson - Fifty Shades Darker

Charlie Hunnam King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword
Universal

Where Dornan's performance is too restrained, co-star Dakota Johnson veers dangerously in the opposite direction.

Hollywood regularly struggles to deliver well-crafted sex scenes; they're either too laughable, too unconvincing, or too exaggerated - and by some miracle, Johnson manages to make hers all three.

A kiss on the neck? The actress screams like she's just won the lottery. A cheeky little slap? Best whip out those earplugs. This magnified approach to the between-the-sheets action was seemingly a misjudged attempt to make these scenes more erotic, but it ends up making the whole thing feel like a parody.

Outside the bedroom, things don't improve. Ana is now a boring, archetypal working girl, completely drained of that awkwardness and likable clumsiness that at least made her performance in the first movie fun in places, but here, she's too straight-laced and boring for even a shred of enjoyment to be had.

The only silver lining here is that the final movie in the series comes out relatively soon, February next year. This means that both Dornan and Johnson, two otherwise solid performers, can start washing the pungent stink of the Fifty Shades franchise off their CV's in about eight months time.
