10 Worst Performances In Awesome 2017 Movies
2. Tom Hiddleston – Kong: Skull Island
Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ rollicking monster movie mash-up offers
a fresh take on one of cinema’s most iconic characters by updating the action
to the Vietnam War era and adding a classic rock soundtrack. One of the best
things about Kong: Skull Island is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously
which is exactly the kind of attitude you need in a movie where dudes are
facing off against gigantic water buffalos, huge spiders and a
hundred-foot-tall ape.
John C. Reilly, who plays a crazed former soldier stranded on Skull Island since WWII, and Samuel L. Jackson – a Captain Ahab-like US Army lieutenant – get this and ham it up in their respective roles. Star Tom Hiddleston, however, misses the point entirely.
Stiff and po-faced throughout, Hiddleston plays it straight with a perma-frown and a bland performance that quite frankly zaps a lot of fun out of the movie. Not to mention that as a rather puny, unimposing guy he doesn’t really convince as a tough SAS soldier.
If he’d taken a cue from his more comedic turn as Loki in Thor: Ragnarok, Hiddleston may have delivered a more fun and befitting performance but as it is he drags Kong: Skull Island down.
