10 Worst Performances In Awesome 2017 Movies
1. Jake Gyllenhaal – Okja
Ostensibly a touching tale of the bond between a young girl
and her giant genetically modified pig, South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho’s Okja
is also a dark critique of capitalism, the meat production industry and
irresponsible animal rights activism and one of 2017’s most charming, clever
and weird films.
Okja did have a weak spot, however, in the shape of Jake Gyllenhaal’s OTT performance as washed-up TV zoologist Dr Johnny Wilcox. Clad in khaki shorts and tacky shirts with a Groucho Marx-esque moustache and glasses, Gyllenhaal is like Steve Irwin on crack in a performance we assume is supposed to be amusingly eccentric but actually results in one of the year’s most irritating, off-putting and punchable characters.
Gyllenhaal isn’t exactly known for his comedic acting skills and Johnny Wilcox shows that’s for good reason. He’s clearly out of his comfort zone and amps up his character to cartoonish levels that are too obnoxiously bizarre even in a film as weird as Okja.
