8. Ruth Took The Blame For Her Sister Killing The Cop - The Unforgivable
Netflix's new drama The Unforgivable revolves around Ruth Slater (Sandra Bullock), a woman released from prison after spending 20 years inside for murdering a sheriff who attempted to evict her and her 5-year-old sister, Katie, who Ruth was raising.
The film spends most of its time exploring Ruth's attempts to reintegrate into society and make contact with her now-adult sister (Aisling Franciosi), all while the sons of the slain sheriff seek revenge against her.
But late in the film a surprising truth is revealed, that Ruth didn't actually shoot and kill the sheriff - young Katie did, but in order to protect her Ruth decided to take the rap for it.
There are worse ideas for plot twists in movies, but ultimately in this case the execution is so lazily manipulative, designed to surprise and push your emotional buttons by any means necessary, that it actually ends up feeling incredibly icky and offputting.
Beyond that, it undermines the film's initially intriguing examination of a person attempting to return to society after committing a seemingly heinous crime, in turn re-framing Ruth in a less-interesting and totally unchallenging way.
