5. Ethan Is The Killer - The Woman In The Window
The Woman in the Window is a grand old mess of a thriller, albeit one that's at least good for a few laughs at its expense, while marvelling at Amy Adams' needlessly committed performance.
The story revolves around Dr. Anna Fox (Adams), an agoraphobic woman who spends most of her time watching her neighbours from her second-story window, while also imbibing alcohol and chugging medications on the regular.
As Anna begins to become suspicious that one of her neighbours has been murdered, the audience is also led to consider the possibility that Anna is simply deluded and her perception of events is possibly tainted by her substance issues.
There are admittedly a few different twists for audiences to chew on, such as Anna's "estranged" family having actually died in a car crash she accidentally caused, but the kicker is that the killer of Katie Melli (Julianne Moore) isn't the neon-signposted Alistair Russell (Gary Oldman) as suspected.
Instead, the murderer is Katie and Alistair's 15-year-old son Ethan (Fred Hechinger), who also happens to be a deranged serial killer and has effectively been gaslighting Anna during the film. He then attempts to make Anna his next victim, but she manages to fight him off and eventually kill him instead.
On one hand some might enjoy this loony twist as dumb schlock, but on the other it's an embarrassing, unintentionally hilarious misfire for a movie that was courting considerable Oscar buzz while it was in production. Oof.
