10 Worst Sci-Fi Horror Movies Of All Time
9. The Angry Red Planet
The Angry Red Planet was the first movie to use a filmmaking technique called CineMagic. This process is supposed to blend animation with live-action. It turned out so badly, The Angry Red Planet was also the LAST film to use this technology.
So what inspired the producer, Norman Maurer, to use CineMagic? Was it so the movie had an eerie atmosphere or to highlight how alien this world is?
No. CineMagic was created by completely by accident. When one of the reel negatives for the movie was double-exposed, it tinted the image with a reddish glow. The director, Ib Melchior, thought this psychedelic look worked perfectly for the Mars scenes and incorporated it into the movie. But because this technique ate up a quarter of the film's budget, Melchior had to sacrifice a couple of things.
So what did he sacrifice?
Everything.
Melchior used the cheapest sets, props, and alien models to ensure every spare cent in the budget went into this unintentional special effect. The movie is so cheap, the spaceship, Martian city, and the aliens are hand-drawn in some shots! Although Melchior hoped CineMagic would revolutionise the industry, the glaring red colour came across as pointless, gimmicky, and ugly.
